Draft Profile: Carson DeMartini (Virginia Tech)

Height: 6'0

Weight: 190

Bats/Throws: Left/Right

Carson DeMartini, one of the best freshmen in the country in 2022, followed it up with a solid 2023 season. He enters 2024 as one of the best third basemen in college baseball and has a good chance of being selected in the first two rounds of the 2024 MLB Draft.

DeMartini slashed .323/.455/.593 in 2023 with 10 home runs and 57 runs batted in.

DeMartini has a smooth swing from the left side and seemingly has raw power. His in-game power does not yet have a full translation, as his game has more swing-and-miss elements in the zone. But when DeMartini makes sound contact, it is loud and jumps off his bat.

DeMartini's hands are quick, and he can turn on pitches left out in his area in a hurry. His potential power contribution is evident when you see him making loud contact like this against Oklahoma in the 2022 Super Regionals.

DeMartini also shows the ability to lift the ball effectively and does not roll over very often on pitches that he does make contact with. This allows him to have the ability to protect the plate effectively against pitches lower in the strike zone when he does make contact.

DeMartini’s bat-to-ball skills in the strike zone could improve, but he does show pertinent plate discipline. He walked more times than he struck out in 2023 (46 BB to 42 K) and has demonstrated improvement over the course of his college career. His holistic development as a hitter is worth noting.

DeMartini is an above-average athlete. He has the range to stick at third base and has a strong arm for the position. He should be able to handle third base at the major league level.

DeMartini projects to continue in the line of position players taken from Virginia Tech early in the 2024 MLB Draft. His raw power is enticing and helps in his projection to be a major league power hitter from the left side of the plate with higher walk rates relative to the league average. His glove and arm also provide value defensively at third base. If DeMartini can progress on his contact rates in the zone in 2024, he will have an even more exciting player profile as to the caliber of player he could be.
